The integumentary system serves as the body’s first line of defense against environmental threats, e.g. injury, infection, and dehydration.
Skin: | The largest organ, providing protection and regulating temperature. It has three main layers: the epidermis (outer layer), dermis (middle layer), and subcutaneous tissue (inner layer). The two lower layers contain blood vessels to equip the cells with the required nutrients and to remove all the waste products. Thanks to the nerves that contain sensory receptors the skin also plays a role in sensation, helping us detect touch, heat, and pain. |
Glands: | Sweat and oil glands help regulate body temperature and keep the skin moisturized. |
Hair: | Offers insulation and protection.It also plays a role in social and sexual communication. |
Nails: | Protects the tips of fingers and toes,enhance fine motor skills, and assist in grasping objects. |
